Infiniti Q50 Lands in Europe with Merc's 168HP 2.2-liter Diesel and 359HP Hybrid Version

The brand-new Infiniti Q50, which made its world debut at the Detroit Motor Show last January, made its European premiere in Geneva and, according to the manufacturer, it is its “most significant car yet for the European marketplace”.

That’s because the rear-wheel drive sedan is designed to compete in the compact premium class where it will face some stiff opposition. Since most Europeans opt for diesel engines, the Q50 will be available in the Old Continent with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that puts out 168HP (170PS) and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

In spite of a pretty respectable 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of under 9 seconds, Infiniti announces an average consumption figure of just 4.4 lt/100 km (53.5 mpg US, 64 mpg UK) and less than 115g of CO2 per km.

This engine is the first fruit of Infiniti's collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and will be available with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed auto transmission, both tailored to Infiniti’s own specs.

Clients wishing more oomph can opt for the second version of the Q50 that will be offered in Europe, the 3.5 Hybrid that, thanks to its 359HP (364PS) output sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 5.5 seconds.

The Q50 Hybrid uses the same dual-clutch Direct Response Hybrid and seven-speed auto transmission as the M35h “big brother” but with an extended EV-only range and improved performance and efficiency: its average consumption is 6.2 lt/100 km (38 mpg US, 45 mpg UK) and it emits less than 145 g/km of CO2.

The diesel Q50 will be offered only with rear-wheel drive while the Hybrid will be available with AWD, too. Both models will go on sale from autumn, depending on the market, in standard and Sport versions.

2013 Geneva Motor Show

If we are nearing the end of February, then it must be time for the Geneva Auto Show that takes place each year in March. This is the 83rd time that automakers will gather in the Swiss city to display their latest models; the Palexpo center will open its gates on March 5 for the press and two days later for the public and will last until March 17.

In spite of all the fuss about “green” transportation, the 2013 Geneva Auto Show’s most anticipated new models are sports cars.

First and foremost, there’s the Alfa Romeo 4C – a two-seater, rear-wheel drive coupe with a carbon fiber chassis that heralds the Italian manufacturer’s new era and its long-anticipated return to the U.S. market.

2013 Geneva Motor Show

Then there’s the Formula 1 duel that has been taken to the streets: Ferrari will unveil the Enzo successor, code-named F150, and rival McLaren, the production version of the P1. Interestingly, both hypercars will be powered by hybrid powertrains and despite putting out in excess of 900-horses, they promise ultra-low CO2 emissions.

Other sports car that will make their premiere in Geneva are the open-top versions of the brand-new Corvette Stingray and the Toyota GT 86 (Scion FR-S in the U.S.), the Aston Martin Rapide S and Vantage SP10 and, of course, a special Lamborghini to celebrate the Sant’ Agata-based company’s 50th anniversary.

Naturally, the show won’t be only about sports cars: BMW will launch the 3-Series GT, China's Qoros its 3 Sedan, Volvo its updated range and the VW Group the electrified Audi A3 and VW Golf models.

That’s far from a full description of the cars that will debut at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show, but you can scroll down and view the provisional list in detail.

As always, it will be updated constantly so watch this space.

2013 Infiniti M35h GT

The choice for the world's fastest-accelerating hybrid saloon has just got easier. A new Infiniti M35h GT version of the record-breaking Infiniti V6 saloon delivers all the performance and low emissions for which the M35h is known - but at a considerably more attractive starting position. The additional model at £41,101 costs £3,970 less than the Infiniti M35h GT Premium which until now was the sole version available.
The Infiniti M35h GT arrives in Infiniti Centres from July 2012, and in common with every new M the line-up benefits from a highly competitive new price structure as well as several enhancements, including a soft-closing boot function.

The additional entry model ensures Infiniti's "no compromise" hybrid approach reaches as large a market as possible. A recent reduction in CO2 emissions further cuts running costs with both versions of the M35h falling below the important 160g/km tax threshold.

"Cost of ownership is an important consideration in any new car purchase. With the M35h GT grade it now means that the P11D values have been reduced and along with the recently improved CO2 rating there are lower bills for companies and for their drivers," said Infiniti UK Fleet Sales Manager, Simon Lewis.

Previously the navigation system was available only as part of a package with 16-speaker Bose® surround sound. But, in response to customer wishes, a new separate option of Connectiviti+, Infiniti's navigation/entertainment system, has been introduced on GT and S models at a highly competitive £1800 - a price that also includes one of the most sophisticated climate control systems available, Forest Air®.

The option, if taken, will add to the famously generous specification expected from any Infiniti product. On an 'M' these include such items as semi-aniline leather seat facings, heated and ventilated front seats, bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS), alloy wheels and White Ash wood trim finished with real silver powder.

As before, M30d S, M30d S Premium and M37 S Premium add a sporting focus with larger alloy wheels, 4-Wheel Active Steering, and sports suspension, brakes and seats, along with black lacquer trim in the cabin.

Now well established in the range, Infiniti's top-selling 'Premium' models are equipped with Infiniti's complete suite of safety and convenience technologies including Blind Spot InterventionTM, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Prevention (LDP).

The overall quality of the Infiniti M has also been recognised within the American J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. The Infiniti M came top of the Midsize Premium Car segment ahead of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible

The 2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible, which is set to go on sale in spring 2012, becomes the second member of the Infiniti Performance Line of premium performance vehicles. First introduced with the dramatic IPL G Coupe, IPL's product design philosophy focuses on "total vehicle performance," including unique driving attributes and exclusive exterior and interior features at a highly attractive price point. The new Infiniti IPL G Convertible features special aerodynamic styling pieces, the dynamic performance of an IPL-tuned V6, exhaust and suspension, 19-inch IPL aluminum-alloy wheels, and unique leather-appointed interior - along with the G Convertible's three-piece retractable hardtop.

"The Infiniti Performance Line, as demonstrated by our first offering, the IPL G Coupe, challenges the concept of ultra-high cost sports series. IPL pushes the premium performance envelope for buyers seeking a higher level of exclusivity and driving exhilaration, but does so with an Infiniti twist," said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore. "Like every Infiniti, the new IPL G Convertible takes a different path from its established competitors, with its retractable hardtop that is designed to look as good with the top up as down. It's a terrific addition to the Infiniti Performance Line, taking the dramatic Infiniti G Convertible to an even higher level."

Based on the premium foundation of the Infiniti G37 Convertible, the IPL G Convertible features an advanced VQ37VHR 3.7-liter V6. The engine management system has been recalibrated through air-fuel mixture and ignition timing optimization, raising the maximum horsepower output point to 7,400 rpm. To obtain a natural acceleration feel, the torque curve from low revs to the maximum torque point (5,200 rpm) was tuned for linearity. The IPL-tuned high-flow exhaust is a full dual exhaust design with independent left and right large diameter pipes. The muffler's inner structure and materials have been maximized to reduce pressure and provide an appropriate performance exhaust note. The result is a 30% reduction in exhaust pressure versus a base G Convertible's Y-pipe exhaust system design.

2013 Infiniti FX Vettel Edition

Combining exclusivity with exceptional levels of dynamism, the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition is a production car with a unique position in the global automotive market: it was inspired by, and developed in conjunction with, the reigning Formula One World Champion.

2013 Infiniti FX Vettel Edition
2013 Infiniti FX Vettel Edition

The most powerful and expensive Infiniti ever made is the realisation of Sebastian Vettel's wish for an FX with even more focus and ability than standard, and endowed with a bespoke aerodynamic, aesthetic and technical nature that draws on Formula One practices. Crucially, the car had to achieve all this while keeping all driving elements in balance, preserving the sports car DNA at the heart of every FX.

BACKGROUND
Sitting at the summit of Infiniti's range, the strictly-limited production crossover represents the fulfilment of Sebastian Vettel's dream to turn his "company car" - an Infiniti FX50 S Premium - into an even more rewarding sports crossover with an extra emphasis on performance and handling, and with looks that take their cue from the world of Formula One.

Sebastian's idea came to life at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 when in a classic motor industry "back of the envelope" moment he and Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti's Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, sketched out the basis for what would become the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition.

Just six months later at the Frankfurt Motor Show of 2011 the FX Vettel concept had its world premiere to universal approval. It had been six months when Shiro Nakamura and Sebastian Vettel collaborated closely, defining the key changes that would mark the transformation from an already powerful and sporting SUV to a sports car SUV that could deliver everything the reigning Formula One World Champion wanted in a road car.

The production version was confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012 - just 12 months after the first discussions. And showing how right those early ideas were, the production version is about 95% identical to the concept.

Infiniti is working with CRD (Car Research & Development, a member of the Brabus Group) in Germany to assemble the 150 Vettel Edition models. The first pre-production car made its dynamic debut, driven by Sebastian Vettel, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in June. Since then Infiniti has made six more pilot models for testing and development work, prior to full production commencing in February 2013.

The first car is promised for the hands of the double World Champion; customer deliveries are due to begin in March 2013.

DESIGN
Exterior design merges the already dynamic form of the FX50 with elements of Sebastian Vettel's other company car, the Red Bull Racing RB8. F1-grade carbon-fibre replaces standard body sections to create the new look, one defined at the front by an entire new under-bumper section.

Inspired by the design of the RB8's front wing profile, the multi-layer spoiler saves weight, reduces drag and smoothes the airflow under the car, playing a key role in helping to balance downforce. Designed by Shiro Nakamura, the spoiler section presents perhaps the most cohesive example yet of how F1 design elements can enhance a production road car.

Carbon blades are fitted inside the Infiniti's signature double-arch grille, and carbon shells, profiled with the aerodynamic efficiency of a cycle racing helmet, are fitted over the mirrors. Carbon side skirts are installed, visually complementing the car's 20mm lower ride height, while the wheelarch mouldings are body colour instead of black. Uniquely in the European markets where it will be sold, the Vettel Edition is the only FX not to have roof rails.

Head-on, the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition presents a lower and even more purposeful stance, offering a new visual signature that is defined by a row of LED daytime running lights seamlessly incorporated in the new spoiler section. The lights include new LED foglights - the smallest ever homologated, and among the most powerful.

At the rear the (optional) roof wing is made of carbon-fibre and mounted on milled alloy supports, the wing's profile shaped for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. Ditto the rear diffuser, which defines the car's look from the rear with twin exhaust pipes flanking one of the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition's most evocative features: the rear foglight in the form of an F1 car's centre rain light. Attention to detail means it is clear-lensed and made up of 15 red LEDs, all exactly like an F1 car's light. Alas, regulations mean it is not allowed to flash…

All the body-shaping work has been inspired by the aerodynamics of the Red Bull Racing F1 car. With the carbon body additions including rear spoiler, the car boasts 30% more downforce than the standard car, as well as a reduction in drag of 5%.

The wheel design was chosen primarily for strength and light weight. Each of the forged alloy rims from BBS® weighs 3.5kg less than the standard car's wheels, making a significant positive impact on the car's unsprung weight - to the benefit of driving dynamics including steering behaviour and handling. Finely spoked and finished in black, the wheels are 21-inches, like the standard car's, and are shod with 265/45 tyres.

Each of the 150 models is distinguished by a trio of special Vettel badges, two on the flanks and one on the tailgate. Each badge comprises seven components which are put in place using a special template. The first was affixed at Tochigi in Japan in early October by Sebastian Vettel when he visited the FX production to see "his" car being made.

INTERIOR
There is one Vettel badge on the inside: it is inlaid into a carbon-fibre panel on the centre console. Behind the cover is the glowing blue-rimmed push button that electrically opens the exhaust flaps - the vFX Vettel Edition driver's guarantee of V8 aural excitement.

Carbon covers the centre stack and is additionally used on the door trims and above the glovebox. The technical feel is enhanced by Alcantara® replacing the leather on the centre sections of the seats. The front seats, with 14-way electric adjustment (including adjustable thigh and backrest bolsters) offer the ideal cornering support such a car needs. Alcantara® is also used on the A and B pillars and the rooflining. The steering wheel and gear selector are swathed in leather. Purple stitching is used throughout - a uniquely Infiniti touch.

The enhancements are not at the expense of the FX's trademark luxury or standard features. With plenty of legroom for up to five people and a 410-litre boot, the FX Vettel Edition can double up as a limousine or load carrier when required - part of the reason Sebastian Vettel gives for the FX fitting his lifestyle so well. A power tailgate, with programmable height, is one of a number of recent additional features on all FX models.

PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING
The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition features mechanical changes that build on the responsiveness and handling of what is already a sporting machine without detracting from the innate balance of the whole - a key factor in guaranteeing the car's pure driving enjoyment. The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition dynamics have been optimized, not revolutionized.

The muscular 5.0-litre V8, featuring VVEL (variable valve lift and timing) - Infiniti's guarantee of power with maximum efficiency - develops 390PS in standard form, delivered to Infiniti's intelligent torque-sensing all-wheel drive system via a 7-speed adaptive shift automatic transmission with solid magnesium gearshift paddles. For the FX Vettel Edition, power is increased to 420PS thanks to changes that include a new exhaust system. Torque also benefits: up to 520Nm from an already impressive 500Nm.

The exhaust pipe with optimized flow features an exhaust flap system, operated from a button on the dashboard that boosts power and efficiency at the same time as enriching the drive with the highest calibre of V8 burble. The extra aural stimulation is noticed only when the engine is under load - or when in manual mode and the transmission blips the throttle for downchanges - and for normal cruising the car retains all the refinement of the standard model.

The new body profile and lowered stance bring aerodynamic improvements that work with suspension changes to endow an already agile and responsive car with a new higher level of ability at all speeds. Where grip, precision, balance and traction are concerned, the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition could be a sports car.

Sport springs and 20mm taken out of the ride height are the keys to unlocking the extra ability in the FM (front-midship) chassis with its near perfect weight distribution, low centre of gravity and features that include Continuous Damping Control (CDC) shock absorbers and, for agility with supreme high-speed stability, Rear Active Steering (RAS).

Proving the excellence of the FX50 in standard form, little else had to be changed to suit the more dynamic character of the FX Vettel Edition. In the braking department, ventilated discs and 4-piston opposed front/2-piston opposed rear callipers offer exceptional stopping power. In Vettel Edition form, the five-star EuroNCAP FX is naturally fitted with the whole suite of Infiniti's advanced electronic safety systems.

MANUFACTURE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Infiniti FX Vettel production is limited to 150 editions worldwide. Fifty cars are for Western Europe, 50 for Russia and 50 for the Middle East. Production is due to start on 1 February 2013 in a new assembly hall, currently under construction, in Bottrop, Germany. All the cars will be complete by mid June.

Each Infiniti FX Vettel Edition requires 320 man-hours to build by a team of 25 craftsmen, with all the work done by hand - with help from the occasional laser. That is used to perforate the Alcantara® so that the front seats' cooling function remains; only lasers provided the necessary accuracy. Further illustrating the exceptional attention to detail, special thread that is an exact match for Infiniti purple had to be imported from Japan for use in the car's distinctive stitching in the retrimmed cabin.

The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition body is transformed by 13 pieces of light but extremely strong carbon-fibre, the same grade and the result of the same "Prepreg"-carbonprocess as that used by the Red Bull Racing F1 team. Each piece is hand-crafted and finished with 12 coats before assembly.

The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition has been extensively tested in Japan and Germany. Infiniti engineers and the CRD development team have racked up 13,000 miles in each pre-production model, mostly on autobahns, including drives on test tracks like in Papenburg with its re-creation of many of the Hockenheim F1 circuit's corners. Each of the 150 cars will be subject to a intense final test drive before being approved for delivery.

VIP drive events continue to play an important role in the FX Vettel Edition program, consistent with Infiniti's ethos of hospitality. The most recent was at Le Castellet circuit in France where Sebastian Vettel demonstrated the car for an invited audience that included many of the people who have already put their names down to buy it. Many more such events are planned, all part of a money-can't-buy experience that ownership of the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition unlocks.

2012 Infiniti LE Concept

The Infiniti LE Concept, made its world debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, is more than just the latest in the series of dramatically styled, technologically advanced concepts from Infiniti. Though sharing much with the stunning futuristic Infiniti concepts that have come before – a sweeping aerodynamic body, an elegantly intelligent interior, inspired driving performance and advanced next-generation technology – the Infiniti LE Concept is more grounded in reality. A production version is expected to reach Infiniti showrooms in near-similar form within the next two years as Infiniti’s first zero emission luxury sedan.

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

"In a future that holds an increasing consumption of natural resources, we will advance our sustainable mobility leadership and expand our EV market penetration with new electric vehicles such as the Infiniti LE Concept," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. "Infiniti is well positioned to deliver the objectives for a sustainable future, relying on our capable, hard-working and motivated team members around the world. We are a challenger."

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

From inception, the LE Concept has been designed as a pure Infiniti, rather than as an electric vehicle with luxury appointments. The vehicle is also substantial in form – about the same overall length as an Infiniti G Sedan – supporting Infiniti’s belief that zero emission does not have to mean small. The Infiniti LE Concept does not compromise either roominess or comfort, which is why it starts with an advanced luxury-styled sedan body, not a converted hatchback.

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

"The LE Concept’s bold exterior is defined by its underlying high performance. It is first and foremost an Infiniti, born of our philosophy of Inspired Performance. Rather than taking an EV and adding an Infiniti badge, we are taking an Infiniti and removing the tailpipe," explained Poore. "Infiniti is all about challenging convention, which this vehicle does – proving that luxury at the next level can be both gorgeous and zero emission."

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

The LE Concept’s dramatic exterior blends distinctive Infiniti design cues, such as its double-arch grille and crescent-cut rear-pillar, with EV aerodynamic efficiency to create a sleek, emotional silhouette. The strong shoulder line, which directs the eye from front to rear, expresses a dynamic, elegant flowing movement. The beautifully balanced proportions represent an efficient dynamic form as a new definition of luxury.

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

A number of design features contribute to the coefficient of drag of 0.25, which aids driving range, including the aluminum-alloy wheels with aero treatment, the high rear deck, rear aero diffuser and aero side fin spoilers with integrated illumination. The large front grille features a solid finisher and a charge port hidden under the illuminated center Infiniti emblem. The deep-skirted front fascia includes an aero fin spoiler with illumination. The iconic Infiniti LED headlights and taillights echo the design direction of Infiniti’s recent Infiniti Essence and EMERG-E concepts.

2012 Infiniti LE Concept
2012 Infiniti LE Concept

Special illumination located under the rear diffuser illustrates the positioning of the wireless charger. The already dramatic exterior is accentuated by blue LED lighting that flows around the lower panels. Distinctive Infiniti EV Blue paint is adopted to enhance the sense of Infiniti EV-ness on the door handles and wheels.

"The LE Concept exterior is shaped to maximize its aerodynamic efficiency, yet it doesn’t scream ‘electric vehicle.’ The design priorities are on visibility, hospitality and utility – and, of course, Infiniti-ness," said Poore. "The same can be said of the interior, which takes advantage of the low-noise drivetrain to provide the tranquil quietness of a living room, though one that offers far more exhilaration and mobility."

The Infiniti LE Concept’s efficient EV platform maximizes interior space by placing the batteries under the passenger compartment floor. This positioning helps provide a low vehicle center of gravity for enhanced handling and maximizes trunk room, without compromising front or rear seat passenger legroom or comfort. Beyond its advanced packaging, the real beauty of the interior design is its "smart hospitality" – combining a luxurious Infiniti environment with next-generation instrumentation, driver interface and connectivity.

The LE Concept interior is anchored by its Infiniti signature double-wave layout, which flows seamlessly from instrument panel to the center console and down the cabin sides – embracing driver and passengers in a generous, energetic space. The double-wave design is highlighted by special soft LED Infiniti EV Blue lighting that flows in two waves from front to back, while the center console forms a strong anchor line that penetrates the interior space. The center console finisher adds a touch of EV-ness though use of a "Hamon" (ripple) design. A sculpted shift knob comfortably controls the LE Concept’s drive system.

Infiniti-EV meters combine modern digital display and timeless analog gauges, creating an atmosphere of both exclusivity and futuristic design. The center cluster features an innovative connected twin display powered by an Intel Atom™ processor. The twin display will offer Infiniti LE drivers access to the kinds of information that EV drivers will appreciate such as a dynamic range calculator that will use onboard and cloud based data. As the public charging station network expands, the on-board database will be kept current. And on compatible charger networks, the driver will be able to confirm real time charger availability.

The elegant, bolstered seat and door trim design also comes from traditional roots, inspired by the "Eriashi" (collar) of a Japanese kimono. The seats are covered in a suede-and-mesh fabric with violet accents, and semi-aniline leather sides. The unique interior color combination of blush violet for upper portions and light white for lower also reinforces the vehicle’s Infiniti EV-ness.

"Today’s luxury EV intenders expect their EV to be a luxury vehicle first, with advanced technology, cutting-edge design and premium appointments," said Poore. "The Infiniti LE Concept delivers in every dimension, welcoming driver and passenger as guests, much as you’d expect in the owners’ homes."

As a fusion of hospitality and Inspired Performance, the Infiniti LE Concept is designed to stimulate, not sedate. Targeting "impressive EV acceleration without sacrificing the range," the engineering team behind the LE Concept’s e-powertrain sought a silent, smooth response for both accelerating from a start and re-accelerating, such as merging onto freeways or changing lanes. Torque of 240 lb-ft is instantly available immediately at all times. The Infiniti LE Concept’s battery system is a proven laminated 24 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) design with a ChaDeMo DC50kW quick charger.

"A luxury car for a new generation of sustainable luxury buyers must not compromise on performance. Buyers want ‘green,’ but won’t settle for any aspect of the driving experience being less than that of their current luxury vehicles," explained Poore. "For those who have never driven a modern EV, the immediate full-torque response when you step on the accelerator is amazing. It empowers you, without overpowering you – though the temptation is always there to leave drivers in the next lane behind."

A smooth, comfortable ride is provided by the e-platform’s high body stiffness (with rigid-mounted battery frame), front independent strut/rear torsion beam suspension with double-piston shock absorbers. Handling is enhanced by the low noise, vibration and harshness e-powertrain, along with the low center of gravity and concentration of vehicle weight in the center of the vehicle

The Infiniti LE Concept’s connectivity to the outside world includes the next generation of Infiniti Connection features, such as Infiniti Personal Assistant 24-hour concierge service, navigation, and POI search.

The IT system, which includes a large twin display, is easy to operate. The twin display offers drivers all of the information they want, displayed in the right place. The system can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle at pre-set times, synchronize with web calendars and search for local charging stations. The system will be capable of reserving charging stations at public venues such as malls or ballparks (once the appropriate infrastructure is in place).

"These advanced connectivity features and services will help mitigate range and charging concerns among new sustainable luxury buyers," said Poore. "Along with no trade-offs for luxury performance or hospitality, we believe that sustainable luxury should be intuitive, not intrusive."

In terms of charging, the Infiniti LE Concept is equipped to utilize an integrated charging port, a DC Fast Charge option and an advanced Wireless Charging System.

"In keeping with the Infiniti challenger mentality, the LE Concept includes a built-in Wireless Charging System, which we expect to be the first home-based wireless charging system if adapted for the production version," said Poore. "All you have to do is park your vehicle over the charging pad with no need to connect cables."

The system’s non-contact charging is via inductive energy flow, with a coil safely encased on the garage floor. The primary coil is connected to the energy source, which then creates a magnetic field that excites electric current in a second coil in the LE Concept. The high-frequency charging, controlled by the twin display or smartphone, is safe for children and pets and can be installed easily in a home garage.

In addition, taking inspired technology a step beyond, the Infiniti LE Concept features an Intelligent Park Assist with Around View™ Monitor to easily align the vehicle in the proper position over the wireless charging coil. The system uses e-steering, with full forward and backward capability, along with a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

It also bookmarks the parking place in GPS so that once the vehicle enters the garage, for example, the navigation system will automatically switch to Around View™ Monitor and the system is ready to park the car.

"With the Wireless Charging and Intelligent Park Assist, there are no cables, no maintenance and no concern about the perfect alignment of vehicle and charger," said Poore. "So, on top of no longer having to pump gas, you will no longer have to connect charging cables."

2012 Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel Concept

Just six months after the idea first surfaced, the Infiniti FX designed for reigning Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel is unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show. What began as a chat between the Red Bull Racing driver and Infiniti's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, at the 2011 Geneva Show in March is revealed, in concept form, as Infiniti's fastest car yet and, probably, the most exclusive crossover ever made.

With its sophisticated technology, lightweight components and features such as Rear Active Steering for maximum agility, the V8 FX50S Premium - Infiniti's flagship as well as its best-selling model in some markets - provides the ideal starting point for the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version. Changes including increased power, lower weight, derestricted top speed, longer gearing, increased downforce and lowered and stiffer suspension turn what is already a sports car among crossovers into a crossover supercar - the 300km/h reality of the World Champion's vision.

Infiniti's Corporate Vice President Toru Saito said: "The FX Sebastian Vettel version is unique and very much Sebastian's car. But at the same time it is a concept car for Infiniti globally."

Sebastian Vettel, 2010 Formula One World Champion and Infiniti Global Brand Ambassador
"I have been driving an FX all this year and it is a car I love. It fits my lifestyle perfectly and is great fun to drive. But of course, it could go a little faster…

"I drive a lot in Germany on motorways that have no speed limits and have enjoyed my FX around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Driving at high speed where safe and legal is part of my life. As well as a higher top speed I wanted even better stability in my FX, and that meant work on the aerodynamics. It is a tribute to the excellence of the standard FX that achieving all my targets required so few changes.

"This is the first road car I have helped develop. Usually I have hundreds of engineers building one car just for me. So it is fantastic for me to contribute to the design of a car. The result is an Infiniti I am very proud to have my name on. It is all I hoped for: 300km/h, plenty of downforce - and I can still fit my mountain bike in the back. Plus it is totally exclusive - and as an Infiniti driver, that's important."

Design and aerodynamics
As Sebastian says, the first priority for his ultimate FX was to give it more performance. However, whether on the racetrack or the road, speed is just one part of the mix that goes to make a world-beater. All the car's systems, and in particular the aerodynamics, must be up to the task. In the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version they are.

The car's revised aerodynamics profile is the result of changes made by Infiniti designers and engineers after meetings involving Sebastian and Red Bull Racing personnel. A Red Bull Racing RB7 was even shipped to Japan to provide real life inspiration for the team bringing the World Champion's road car dream to life.

Riding 20mm lower than standard and featuring a more aerodynamic, as well as more distinctive, Essence-inspired grille, the most obvious change is the addition of a carbon rear wing. Tests show that it delivers everything that its looks promise - and Sebastian sought - in terms of increased downforce, and stability, at the 300km/h speeds of which the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version is capable.

As well as a 30 per cent improvement in the coefficient of lift (Cl), the special FX boasts a 5 per cent lower coefficient of drag (Cd). Boosting downforce while simultaneously cutting drag is one of the concept's major claims to fame. Even the door mirror housings have been shaped to increase downforce.

Carbon is used for the splitter, sills, front grille, mirror covers and rear diffuser, trimming the weight of what is already one of the lighter SUVs in its size class. Design of the splitter and diffuser is inspired by the F1 car, as is the central rear fog light - just like an F1 car's rain light.

The wheels are 21-inch black multispoke alloys with silver rims, designed exclusively for this car; they don't just look the part but also save weight over the standard 21-inch FX50 wheel. At 2049kg, the Infiniti FX Sebastian Vettel version weighs 46kg less than a standard FX50S Premium.

Lower and even more distinctive with new LED daytime running lights set just below the front bumper section, the concept FX exudes dynamic power. The new look enhances the sports car-like proportions and makes the flowing profile even more seductive. Dark smoke lights back and front complete the look - along with Vettel logos on both sides and at the rear.

Shiro Nakamura, Infiniti Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer

"We are always keen to listen to what our customers have to say about our cars, whoever they are. Equally we are always keen to show how individual our cars are, and how personalization can subtly alter their character. Making the perfect FX for Sebastian was the ideal demonstration of this.

"It was at this year's Geneva Show that Sebastian first suggested to me that we collaborate on making his perfect FX. So we haven't had long, but with very clear objectives we have been able to realize his ideas in a very satisfying manner."

Mechanical changes
With an already potent 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet, relatively little needed to be done to enable the world's most special FX to hit Sebastian Vettel's maximum speed target of 300km/h.

The first job was to free the car of its speed limiter which electronically restricts all other FXs to 250km/h. Even in standard form, with the VVEL V8 producing 390PS at 6500rpm, the car has plenty of performance beyond its artificial top speed, but even so more power had to be found to deliver 300km/h.

No radical engine reworking was necessary to gain the extra 30PS that takes the FX Vettel concept's power output to 420PS. A new exhaust system liberates some of the extra horsepower while a reprogrammed engine ECU takes care of the rest, with no discernible difference to the V8's response or efficiency. And it sounds better than ever.

In addition to the extra power is a longer final drive ratio to deliver 300km/h Autobahn speed without any detrimental effects on refinement. The longer overall gearing means the car is not as quick off the line as it could be - but at 5.6 seconds for 0-100km/h, two tenths of a second ahead of the standard car, no one is complaining. Least of all Sebastian Vettel.

Stiffer springs and re-rated dampers take the FX50's already highly focused sports chassis into a new area of precision control for the smooth-surface, high-speed driving for which the car exists. Essentially, however, making an FX to the World Champion's specification required no major changes. Like any FX in sporting S guise, the concept features dual-flow path (DFP) dampers with continuous damping control (CDC); the same wishbone front/multilink rear suspension, much of it constructed out of aluminium; opposed 4-piston (front), 2-piston (rear) calipers for the 355/350mm brake discs; and vehicle-speed variable rack and pinion steering.

Rear Active Steering, an important ingredient in any FX S's blend of agility with stability, plays a key role in ensuring handling fulfils the World Champion's requirements for a road car.

Interior
The bespoke carbon fibre exterior detailing is echoed in the FX's cabin by tailored panels of black carbon - real, not appliqué - on the doors and centre console. Highlights that would normally be silver chrome are treated to a special black chrome finish, while in true F1 style, Alcantara is used on the steering wheel and gearshift paddles. Special seats, with extra support, are covered in black quilted suede cloth finished with purple stitching and special "SV" logos. The material also features on the pillars, roof lining and sun visors.

A metal plate on the centre console featuring the World Champion's signature provides the unique finishing touch.

The luxury fittings, comprehensive features including Connectiviti+, one of the car world's most complete and easily understood infotainment systems, and the FX's award-winning range of safety technologies are all included. As standard of course. Infiniti believes that no one should be forced to pay for expensive extras - not even World Champions.
