Land Rover to Debut New 9-Speed ZF Automatic Transmission in Geneva

Land Rover will be displaying a new 9-speed automatic transmission for use on its passenger cars and SUVs at next week's Geneva International Auto Show. The new ZF 9HP gearbox was developed by transmission specialist ZF with Land Rover being a lead partner in the project – or so the British company says.

Specifically designed for transverse applications, the ZF unit is rather compact in dimensions, as despite sporting three more gears, it is only 6mm (0.23 inches) longer and actually weighs 7.5kg (16.5 pounds) less than the outgoing six-speed transmission it will replace.

According to the British carmaker, increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine provides significant improvement in fuel consumption and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions, while the smaller ratio steps help improve response during acceleration, shift quality, drive and refinement.

Furthermore, the lowest ratio in the new 9HP is far lower than the existing 6sp transmission, with the company stating that it is specifically designed for "off-road use, towing and more extreme on-road conditions like gradients and altitude, giving the driver a heightened sense of control".

Another special feature of the ZF 9HP is the adaptive shifting system that allows the software to learn from the driver's techniques "within seconds, sharpening up during brisk driving then slipping seamlessly into a more economical regime just as quickly when taking a more relaxed approach," according to Land Rover.

“We are extremely excited about the 9HP which has been tailored exactly to dovetail with the unique attributes of our vehicles,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director. “It will add another layer of performance, refinement and efficiency, further enhancing Land Rover’s world class abilities.”

Further details about the ZF 9HP's availability will be announced during Land Rover's Geneva Motor Show presentation.

News: Rugby + Land Rover = Irish victory?

Hmmm. Last week, we published a little piece on Irish rugby captain Jamie Heaslip picking up his shiny new Land Rover Discovery. And then, Ireland went out and utterly thrashed Wales in the opening game of the RBS 6 Nations. Coincidence? We think not! So here's a photo of the lovely Amy Huberman picking up her new Range Rover Evoque...
Amy, who's not just Brian O'Driscoll's wife but also a fine actress in her own right and a Land Rover Brand Ambassador, has taken delivery of her new Evoque.

Amy has been a Land Rover ambassador since the launch of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011.  In that time, she has driven both the compact coupe model and the five-door version, with its contemporary design and superb accessibility. Presumably, she's switching to a five-door in anticipation of the arrival of her first baby. Wrestling baby seats into the back of the three-door is not to be recommended...

Land Rover's head of Irish PR Melanie McCourt told us that the Evoque is "the smallest, lightest most fuel efficient Range Rover ever produced, and with more than 110 global awards under its belt, the Evoque has gained critical acclaim since its launch.  With a choice of three engines, two body styles, three design themes and an extensive range of options and accessories, the Range Rover Evoque offers drivers significant choice over a wide range of price points.  Prices start from €41,935.  And with Land Rover’s patented Terrain Response® technology, the Evoque masters all surfaces and all weathers."

On receiving the keys to her new Land Rover, Amy Huberman said: “I’m thrilled with my new Evoque.  I’ve really enjoyed driving it over the past year and I’m delighted to drive it home again today.”

Right, that should be us sorted for the England game on the 10th. COME ON IRELAND!!!!!!

News: Jamie Heaslip tackles a new Discovery

You may have noticed some excitement amongst rugby-loving friends this week as anticipation mounts ahead of the opening games of the RBS 6 Nations championship, starting on Saturday with Ireland v Wales. Frankly, we know as much about rugby as the back side of the moon, but hey, here's Ireland captain Jamie Heaslip picking up his shiny new Land Rover Discovery this morning! A band-wagon-jumping we will go...

A self-proclaimed Land Rover enthusiast, Jamie Heaslip was delighted to take delivery of his new Discovery 4: “I’ve been driving the Discovery for almost two years now and it is the perfect vehicle for my lifestyle.  It really is in a class of its own and I’m thrilled to continue driving it this year”.

Land Rover Ireland General Manager, Eddie Kavanagh said: “Land Rover has a well-established relationship with Rugby and as well as supporting Rugby World Cup 2015 in England, the company are also Global Sponsors of The British & Irish Lions for their Tour to Australia 2013.

"Jamie is an excellent brand ambassador for Land Rover in Ireland and I would like to wish him and all his teammates continued success and the very best of luck this Saturday.

"Now in its fourth iteration, the Discovery is an unparalleled vehicle with class-defining versatility and all-round capability.  It can seat seven passengers, can tackle the most challenging off-road conditions and delivers superb on-road refinement.  Featuring a powerful and highly efficient TDV6 3.0 litre diesel engine, fresh exterior and premium cabin, it is the ultimate all-purpose vehicle.

"Prices in Ireland start from €52,925. For more information or to arrange a test drive log onto www.landrover.ie or visit your local Land Rover dealership."

Land Rover Logo

Land Rover is a British car manufacturer with its headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, United Kingdom which specialises in four-wheel-drive vehicles. It is part of the Jaguar Land Rover group, a subsidiary of Tata Motors of India. It is the second oldest four-wheel-drive car brand in the world (after Jeep).

The Land Rover name was originally used by the Rover Company for one specific vehicle model, named simply the Land Rover, launched by Rover in 1948. Over the following years it developed into a marque encompassing a range of four-wheel-drive models, including the Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque. Land Rovers are currently assembled in the company's Halewood and Solihull plants, with research and development taking place at JLR's Gaydon and Whitley engineering centres. Land Rover sold 194,000 vehicles worldwide in 2009.

Although the brand originates from the original 1947 model, Land Rover as a company has only existed since 1978. Prior to this, it was a product line of the Rover Company which was subsequently absorbed into the Rover-Triumph division of the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BL) following Leyland Motor Corporation’s takeover of Rover in 1967. The ongoing commercial success of the original Land Rover series models, and latterly the Range Rover in the 1970s in the midst of BL’s well documented business troubles prompted the establishment of a separate Land Rover company but still under the BL umbrella, remaining part of the subsequent Rover Group in 1988, under the ownership of British Aerospace after the remains of British Leyland were broken up and privatised. In 1994 Rover Group plc was acquired by BMW. In 2000, Rover Group was broken-up by BMW and Land Rover was sold to Ford Motor Company, becoming part of its Premier Automotive Group. In June 2008, Ford sold both Land Rover and Jaguar Cars to Tata Motors.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover

Despite early worries based on spy shots that the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover might bear an uncomfortable resemblance to the Ford Flex, the official images dispel any cause for concern. Still iconically Land Rover while upping the modern/tech factor a notch, the 2013 Range Rover wears its complete redesign well.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover
2013 Land Rover Range Rover

The new Range Rover also undersells some of its updates, including a weight loss of up to 926 pounds compared to the previous model. The U.S.-spec V-8 Range Rover comes in at 700 pounds under the model currently on sale. That's huge--and it will translate into improved gas mileage and better handling.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover
2013 Land Rover Range Rover

So how did Land Rover trim that much weight from the 2013 Range Rover? With aluminum, as the unibody structure is now completely made of the light alloy, instead of the steel used in the outgoing model. The company hasn't specified exactly how much gas that will save the average driver, but we expect it to be significant.

2013 Land Rover Range Rover
2013 Land Rover Range Rover

Joining the all-aluminum unibody, the front and rear chassis structure is also all-aluminum. The Range Rover rides on completely redesigned air suspension at each corner, helping to mitigate the harshness in ride quality that aluminum can engender.

As Land Rover's global brand director, John Edwards, puts it, "The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle--that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability. However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling."

2013 Land Rover Range Rover

Aiding the improved handling and lightness is a new Terrain Response 2 Auto system that can automatically select the proper drive mode for various types of surface materials, though Land Rover has yet to explain the second-generation Terrain Response system in detail.

The 2013 Range Rover is all-new inside, too, adding 4.7 inches of leg room for the rear seat, with an optional two-position seating arrangement in place of the standard second-row bench. Noise levels are kept down with acoustic laminated glass and careful attention to the body's vibration characteristics. Materials and design also focus on high quality while reflecting classic Range Rover design themes. A new sound system developed by Meridian is also standard, while Range Rover's advanced technology like Terrain Response and other driver assistance and chassis control systems are also available.

A choice of V-8 engines will be offered, though Land Rover doesn't specify which--we presume the choice will remain between the 5.0-liter normally-aspirated and 5.0-liter supercharged versions--while a new ZF eight-speed transmission will handle gear shifts.

The first 2013 Range Rovers will arrive in America in December 2012.

Passive start replaces key dock and there's a new 'intelligent' electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. 'Say What You See' - a voice activation system with visual prompts, and rear view camera capability are also both new to the Land Rover Freelander 2.

Exterior design details have been revamped for an integrated and co-ordinated appearance, including more contemporary lights front and rear using the latest LED technology and a new signature graphic in the front running lights. The XS model gains all-new 17-inch alloy wheels and an enhanced bodystyling pack.

"The Freelander 2's equipment levels bring a more premium look and feel to the overall driving experience. In addition, our customers continue to benefit from our refined and economical range of diesel engines," says John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.

He adds: "It's another step forward for the Freelander 2 where outstanding equipment levels, superb design, safety and all-terrain capability continue to set the standards in this class."

All these great new features are underpinned by the fact that the Freelander scores 5 stars in the coveted Euro NCAP for occupant safety. As the most capable SUV in its class, the Land Rover Freelander 2 offers the durability and sure-footed all-terrain breadth of capability both on and off road that only a Land Rover can provide.

Choice of Contrast Roof
Smart new, contrast roof colours can now be chosen against the majority of the Land Rover Defender paint palette. New Premium Seat Design
Premium part leather seats which contour your body are available to the driver and front seat passenger, sporting the Land Rover logo on the backrest. The style of the seat naturally enhances driving support and comfort over the toughest of terrain. An integrated, centre stitch line on the headrest is also visible and adopted to the current standard seat in the Land Rover Defender.

Versatile Interior
The Land Rover Defender's facia continues to be based on a single, large moulding supported on a robust steel rail to help eliminate squeaks and rattles. The instruments provide clear, concise information to the driver with LED illumination. Versatile stowage shelves are conveniently located for both the driver and passenger and two console options are available: a practical open-tray design that keeps contents to hand and a large, lidded design that provides an impressive 14 litres of stowage.

A powerful heating and ventilation system is designed to cope with the most extreme climates and features aluminium plate and fin heat exchangers to deliver impressive performance.

Tall front seats are designed to improve maximum back support and headrest ergonomics in the most demanding of driving conditions and there are robust, supportive second row seats too. The 110 Station Wagon, 110 Double Cab Pick Up and 130 Crew Cab models, can comfortably accommodate three occupants on an asymmetrically-split second row seat. The Station Wagon derivatives have a spring-assisted fold mechanism which helps when folding the seats and when carrying large or awkward loads.

Land Rover Defender 90 Station Wagon second row occupants benefit from a pair of individual, full-size, forward-facing rear seats. Providing excellent comfort levels, these seats are also available as a third row option on the 110 Station Wagon. Accessed either through the rear door or by folding the second row seats, they can be easily folded and stowed sideways in the loadspace.

Seat trims include durable all-vinyl and cloth specifications as well as the half-leather standard seat option and new Premium seats. Three-point safety belts are specified for all seating positions.

Unique Vehicle Architecture
Land Rover Defender's unique vehicle architecture remains unchanged. The chassis frame is available in three different wheelbases and in both standard and heavy-duty guise (for even greater load-bearing capabilities). A total of 14 separate body styles - from pick-ups and soft-tops to crew cabs and station wagons - are produced on the mainstream production line. Beyond this, Land Rover's Engineered To Order team offer a range of products from standard drop-side or box-body conversions to bespoke design and build adaptations.
