New 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible

The new Corvette Stingray Convertible made its first public outing at the 83rd Geneva International Motor Show today, and we must admit, it looks as good, if not better, in the flesh than what the renderings (?) and the official studio shots hinted at.

Chevrolet says the new Corvette Stingray was designed from the get-go to be offered as a convertible model, and as a result, the only structural changes compared to the coupe are limited to accommodations for the folding top and repositioned safety belt mounts.

According to Chevrolet, since no structural reinforcements were required for the convertible, both Stingray models share almost identical power-to-weight ratios.

"With the all-new Corvette Stingray, we designed and developed the coupe and convertible simultaneously," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design. "As a result, the Corvette Stingray offers an open-top driving experience with no compromise in performance, technology or design."

The Corvette Stingray Convertible is fitted with a fully automatic top that can be opened or closed remotely using the key fob from the outside, and at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31mph) when inside.

Like the coupe, the soft-top version is powered by GM's new LT1 6.2-liter V8 delivering an estimated 450 horsepower and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of peak torque, paired to either a 7-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

Customers can also fit the convertible with the track-capable Z51 Performance Package, which includes the following items: an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package to improve high-speed stability.

"We wanted the driving experience of the Corvette to live up to the performance expectations that come with the ‘Stingray’ name,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “Because it was designed from the beginning as an open top car, the Corvette Stingray delivers an exhilarating, connected driving experience - no matter what configuration you choose.”

Both the Corvette Stingray coupe and convertible will arrive in global markets in late 2013. According to GM, changes for Corvettes destined for export "vary only in equipment required to accommodate the respective markets’ regulations, such as lighting, headlamp washers, and outside mirrors".

2013 Geneva Motor Show

If we are nearing the end of February, then it must be time for the Geneva Auto Show that takes place each year in March. This is the 83rd time that automakers will gather in the Swiss city to display their latest models; the Palexpo center will open its gates on March 5 for the press and two days later for the public and will last until March 17.

In spite of all the fuss about “green” transportation, the 2013 Geneva Auto Show’s most anticipated new models are sports cars.

First and foremost, there’s the Alfa Romeo 4C – a two-seater, rear-wheel drive coupe with a carbon fiber chassis that heralds the Italian manufacturer’s new era and its long-anticipated return to the U.S. market.

2013 Geneva Motor Show

Then there’s the Formula 1 duel that has been taken to the streets: Ferrari will unveil the Enzo successor, code-named F150, and rival McLaren, the production version of the P1. Interestingly, both hypercars will be powered by hybrid powertrains and despite putting out in excess of 900-horses, they promise ultra-low CO2 emissions.

Other sports car that will make their premiere in Geneva are the open-top versions of the brand-new Corvette Stingray and the Toyota GT 86 (Scion FR-S in the U.S.), the Aston Martin Rapide S and Vantage SP10 and, of course, a special Lamborghini to celebrate the Sant’ Agata-based company’s 50th anniversary.

Naturally, the show won’t be only about sports cars: BMW will launch the 3-Series GT, China's Qoros its 3 Sedan, Volvo its updated range and the VW Group the electrified Audi A3 and VW Golf models.

That’s far from a full description of the cars that will debut at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show, but you can scroll down and view the provisional list in detail.

As always, it will be updated constantly so watch this space.

First Official Photos of 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible

No more guessing what the 2014 Chevrolet Stingray series' Convertible version will look like as General Motors has just released the first official photos of the car, a few days before it makes its world premiere in Switzerland and the 83rd edition of the Geneva International Auto Salon.

Both images show the Corvette Stingray Convertible from a 3/4 profile angle, with or without its soft-top in the upright position.

General Motors hasn't shared any information about the car yet, but the rear spoiler and other details like the hood vents point to a Z51 package-equipped model, which also includes some performance upgrades such as an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, and integral brake, differential and transmission cooling.

Under the hood you'll find the same 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine rated for 450-horses and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of peak torque connected to either a 7-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission as the coupe.

We'll keep you updated on the Corvette Stingray Convertible as soon as GM comes out with more details.

Final C6 Corvette built in Bowling Green

With all of the attention given to the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray lately, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's already well along in production, yet tooling up for the new C7 has only just begun. In fact, production of the outgoing C6 generation in Bowling Green, Kentucky just halted on Thursday.

As the C6 has aged, production numbers have predictably ebbed along with demand, but this year, the addition of the 427 and 60th anniversary models resulted in an uptick in vehicles built – this, despite a model year shortened by around 25 percent to accomodate the new model changeover. The final C6 Corvette ever, No. 13,466 built this year, was a white 427 Convertible destined for the General Motors Heritage Center museum. The car's 7.0-liter V8 heart was assembled by Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter himself.

In total, Bowling Green pushed out 215,100 C6 Corvettes over nine years. If you're still a C6 fan at heart and are hoping to get a good deal on a phase-out model, step lively – Chevrolet reportedly had about 6,100 unsold units, which Autoweek suggests is good for around five and a half months of supply at the model's current sales rates. Given that demand will likely slacken even further as the C7 draws closer, that should be a big enough stockpile to keep dealers satisfied until 2014 Stingrays begin showing up on their forecourts.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Excitement Speeds into Bowling Green

Yesterday, at 8:04 a.m., the last 2013 Corvette came off the line at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. The celebration was short lived, as less than 30 minutes after the last car was built, workers began remodeling the plant to prepare for the launch of the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray.

A total of 215,100 sixth-generation "C6" Corvettes were made at Bowling Green since production began in 2005, the last of which was the exclusive 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition outfitted with the 60th Anniversary design package. This package boasts an Arctic White exterior and a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior with suede-microfiber accents.

At the heart of the 427 Convertible is the 7.0-liter (427 ci) LS7 aluminum-block V8, which is handcrafted by skilled engine craftsmen at the GM Performance Build Center. For the LS7 destined for the last C6 produced, the engine was built by Corvette executive chief engineer Tadge Juechter.

The last C6 Corvette will join other historic General Motors vehicles at the GM Heritage Center in Warren, Mich.

"Leading up to the production of the last C6 has been all business," said Bowling Green plant manager Dave Tatman. "We take our job seriously and consider it the privilege that it is. But you can't do what we do and not get emotionally attached to the car."

Even as the team celebrated building the last C6, Tatman said there has been a great deal of anticipation and excitement toward building the all-new Stingray.

"The last C6 rolls off the line at 8:04 a.m. and I'll have people in here at 8:30 a.m. to start tearing down and putting in new tools," Tatman said.

The task will require that 120 workers take just four weeks to turn the Bowling Green plant around, completing a job that usually takes months to accomplish. All employees are slated to return to work on March 25, where they will learn the entirely new process required to build the Stingray.

Bowling Green Assembly, which hosts up to 50,000 visitors a year, is currently closed to the public to facilitate the remodeling of the line. Tatman said he plans to reopen the plant to outside tours as soon as possible, knowing that everyone is excited to see this new generation of Corvette built.

New Chevrolet Trax to go on Sale in the UK with a Lower Starting Price than the Mokka

British buyers will soon be able to choose from two slightly different flavored versions of General Motors' new small crossover, as the new Chevrolet Trax will join the already available Vauxhall (Opel for the rest of Europe) Mokka in July.

Chevrolet Trax

Chevrolet Trax

The two models feature a different body detailing and a dashboard design, but beyond that, they are the identical. On Friday, Chevrolet released initial pricing for the Trax that starts from £15,495 for the base petrol-engine LS trim, and £17,495 for the better specified LT that includes Chevy's MyLink technology.

Vauxhall's Mokka starts at £15,995, though; the carmaker has pointed out that this model is geared more towards fleet customers.

The available powertrain options for the Trax are the same as on the Mokka and include an 113hp (115PS) 1.6-liter petrol paired to 5-speed manual, a 138hp (140PS) 1.4-liter turbo'd petrol linked to a 6-speed manual, and a 128hp (130PS) 1.7-liter diesel with either a 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto.

All manual transmission variants come with Stop/Start technology, while buyers will be able to choose between front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants.

Detailed pricing will be released closer to launch in July.

New 2014 Chevrolet Impala Starts from $28,445* in Canada

The new rear-wheel drive SS sports sedan won't be heading to Canada, but another new Chevrolet sedan will, which is only natural since the 2014 Impala is built at GM's Oshawa, Ontario factory as well as at the Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plant.

The new generation of the Impala will reach Canadian dealerships this spring with a starting price of $28,445, which GM says is "just $145 more than the 2013 Impala it replaces", but conveniently forgets to mention in the same sentence that whereas the base version of the 2014 model features a 195hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the outgoing 2013 model is fitted with a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6.

If you want a V6, the 305hp version of the 2014 Impala has an MSRP of $32,945 for the LT and $39,645 for the better equipped LTZ. Besides the base $28,445 LS, other trim grades available for the 2.5-liter engine are the $31,445 LT and $36,445 LTZ. Destination charge on all models is $1,550 (*). GM said pricing for the third engine option, the 2.4-liter gasoline unit with eAssist, will be announced at a later date.

In the U.S., the 2.5L Impala LS starts from $27,535 and the 3.6L LT from $30,760, with both prices including destination charges.

Hennessey Performance To Build A 1,000 Horsepower Corvette Stingray

The 2014 Corvette Stingray won’t begin shipping to dealerships until the third quarter of 2013, but those planning a purchase can already put together a holiday wish list, thanks to Hennessey Performance Engineering.

While the C7 Corvette Stingray will come to market with 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, that’s just not enough thrust for some buyers. Yes, a new Z06 (with up to 600 horsepower) and a new ZR1 (which will target 700 hp) are in the works, but don’t expect either before sometime in 2014.

In the mean time, those with a hardcore need for speed can reach out to Hennessey, which promises to offer supercharger systems to bump the Stingray’s output to 700 horsepower, or twin-turbo systems that will deliver between 800 and 1,000 horsepower.

If the cost (in terms of both dollars and engine life) is more than you’re willing to spend, Hennessey will also offer up bolt-on upgrades that will yield a more modest increase in performance, like cold-air intakes, headers and catalyst-back exhaust systems.

If you’re happy with the as-delivered 450 ponies, Hennessey can still sell you wheel and tire packages, Brembo brake systems and suspension upgrades, to name but a few go-fast options from the company behind the Venom GT supercar.

We’re not sure how far along in the development process Hennessey is, since its website says the parts are planned, not in stock. While you may not be able to park an 800-horsepower, Hennessey-tuned Stingray in the garage a week after you get your C7, we’re sure Hennessey will beat the next ZR1 to market by a comfortable margin.

If you’ve got a 2014 Corvette Stingray on order and want to up its game, head on over to the Hennessey Performance Engineering website for contact information.

Canada Won't be Getting the 2014 Chevrolet SS After All

After taking the decision to transfer production of the next generation Chevrolet Camaro back to the good ol' USA, General Motors is striking another blow to our friends up North as the automaker confirmed that it will not be offering the new 2014 Chevrolet SS performance sedan in Canada.

2014 Chevrolet SS

The bad news comes via Globe and Mail, which cites GM Canada spokesperson George Saratlic as the source. In the States, Chevrolet's rear-wheel drive, 415-horsepower sports sedan will go on sale towards the end of the year in limited production numbers.

On the bright side, Chevrolet's real performance sports car, the new generation Corvette Stingray that was presented at the 2013 Canadian International Auto Show, will make up for the absence of the SS in the brand's local lineup.

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing – a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.

Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties – cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.

Super Silly? Chevrolet SS NASCAR Team and Red Bull Racing do The Harlem Shake

There's no end to The Harlem Shake videos popping up right and left on the internet, and as one would expect, the new viral phenomenon has caught the attention of advertisers and marketing people in the auto industry as well.

Following in the footsteps of so many others, Red Bull Racing Australia and even four-time champion NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon (with the help / push of sponsor Pepsi) and his team who will run the new Chevrolet SS, joined in on the “Harlem Shake” silliness and posted their own videos.

"It was one of the best times I've ever had, certainly the best time I've ever had in my race shop with my guys in there," said Gordon during NASCAR Media Day. "Luckily it was quick, so it didn't take them away from their jobs for too long — because there's a lot going on at the shop. It turned out fun. I'm a little embarrassed at my dancing, but it was still worth it."

Race through the break to watch both clips along with two more, one made by professional stock car motorsports team, Michael Waltrip Racing, and another one from a Texas car meet.

Holden Unwraps New Commodore SS V, Previews 2014 Chevrolet SS [w/Video]

It looks like Holden is trying to grab as much attention as it can with the new generation Commodore VF by spreading out the presentations for each different model of the range.
After the unveiling of the regular Commodore this past weekend, GM's Australian subsidiary announced the performance SS V , which is the closest thing we've seen to the 2014 Chevrolet SS Sports Sedan, which is scheduled to debut this Saturday, February 16 at the Daytona International Speedway.

Holden has peppered the SS V with an air of sportiness through the use of different aerodynamic and styling components such as the smaller front grille and a re-styled front bumper that incorporates a second grille and gloss black trims, side skirts, a boot lid spoiler and a new rear bumper with a diffuser and quad tailpipe outlets.

The pre-production showcar seen here also rides on 20-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in beefy sport tires, while the body is finished in a new Fantale orange metallic paint specially created for this model.

Inside, the SS V benefits from a sportier-themed cabin than the regular Commodore VF with sculpted seats finished in leather with a suede stripe in the center that hug the driver, aluminum trims, a flat-bottom steering wheel and suede accents on the dashboard and doors.

“The sports DNA may be more subtle, but it’s apparent everywhere around you – from the central accent stripe on the seats to the perforated leather inserts, the carbon fibre look cross-car applique, the SS-V Series embroidered ID on the instrument panel, alloy-faced pedals and the traditional red-lit graphic displays,”, said Sharon Gauci, Holden’s Chief Designer, Colour and Trim.

As with the other Commodore VF models, Holden won't say what's hiding under the bonnet, but chances are the rear-wheel drive sports sedan will feature either GM's new LT1 6.2-liter V8 engine with 450-horses that debuted on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray or one of its existing V8s with more than 400-ponies. The showcar was equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox, but both the SS V and the Chevy SS are likely to be offered with an automatic transmission as well.

Sales of the new Holden Commodore will begin in Australia during the second half of the year.
