Rolls Royce Brings the 624HP Wraith Coupe Out in the Open

This is the all-new Wraith, Rolls Royce's luxurious interpretation of a performance coupe. Revealed just hours before it makes its first appearance in front of a crowd at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5, the Wraith is dubbed as the most powerful and fastest production car ever built by Rolls Royce.

What Rolls Royce considers performance and what the rest of the world considers performance, are two very different things, as proved by the Wraith's heavy underpinnings sourced from the Ghost limo and the fact that the British company highlights (pun intended) the car's Starlight Headliner featuring 1,340 fibre optic lamps that "give the impression of a glittering, starry night sky"…

Even so, the Wraith is no slouch, with its tuned 6.6-liter twin-turbo'd V12 engine delivering 624hp (633PS) and a peak torque of 800Nm (590 lb-ft) for a 0-60mph sprint in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds), compared with 563hp and 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds for the Ghost sedan. Rolls-Royce did not disclose the Wraith's top speed. The V12 engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF driving the rear wheels.

Rolls Royce says it has re-tuned the suspension to "minimize body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering; while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive".

The fastback-style coupe is 5,269 mm / 17 ft.3 long, 1,947 mm / 6 ft 5 wide and 1,507 mm / 4 ft 11, while it rides on a 3,112 mm / 10 ft 2 wheelbase, making it 130mm (5.1 inches) shorter in overall length than the Ghost sedan. The Wraith has a curb weight of 2,360 kg / 5,203 pounds.

Inside, you will find a familiar dashboard from the Ghost, the aforementioned "Starlight Headliner" and more wood veneer than a Victorian house.

A new tech feature that makes its debut in the Wraith is the Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT) that relies on GPS data and driving style to select the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead.

Rolls-Royce said sales of the four-seater model will begin in the final quarter of 2013, with European pricing to start from around €245,000 (US$320,000) – evidently, pricing will differ from country to country.

What we know about the new Wraith coupe is that is based on a shorter version of the Ghost sedan's platform using the same V12 engine, but reworked to produce over 600-horses that are channeled to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

While we wait for Rolls-Royce to share all the technical details and less interesting tidbits (for the masses) such as availability and pricing, you can head past the break to check out the photos and tell us what you think about its styling in the comments.

Rolls Royce Recalls Phantom Because Fuel Filler May be Missing a Safety Component

The Rolls-Royce Phantom may cost upwards of $400,000, but it's not immune from recalls, which in this case, is somewhat embarrassing for the British carmaker as it discovered that one of its suppliers forgot to add a safety component.

In particular, Rolls-Royce told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that certain 2013MY Phantom vehicles manufactured from November 2, 2012, through January 18, 2013, might not have anti-misfueling devices mounted on their fuel-filler necks. According to the company, the devices prevent misfueling and discharge static electricity.

"Without the anti-misfueling device, there is an increased risk of fire from static electricity," Rolls-Royce told the NHTSA, adding that it has not received any report nor is it aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

The recall affects 27 cars sold in the United States. Rolls Royce said its dealers inspect the gas tank and replace any affected fuel filler necks, free of charge.

Rolls-Royce mulling V16 roadster, SUV

Rolls-Royce may be working on a new, mega-powerful roadster for 2017. CAR reports the convertible would conceivably boast a V16 engine. Of course, the report gets a little muddled here, with CAR saying the engine would be very similar to that of the one that powers the Bugatti Veyron – the French machine makes use of a W16 mill. Even so, the article says the Rolls-Royce version could put down around 700 horsepower. Design wise, we're told the creation will feature a suitably long nose with the passenger compartment pushed far to the rear.

Of course, 2017 is a long way off, and the thought of a 16-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine bowing under the crush of ever more stringent government fuel efficiency and emission regulations seems unlikely. We'll just put this one in the wait-and-see file for the time being. In the interim, you can hop over to CAR for a closer look at the magazine's rendering of the would-be roadster. If a V16 convertible does happen, look for a smug look on Rowan Atkinson's face.

Oh, and about that SUV? There's not much to report, though CAR does note that officials are keeping a close eye on rival Bentley and its plans for a luxury utility vehicle. Rolls brand boss Harald Krüger has even gone so far as to admit "we're regularly debating whether to take action."

Rolls-Royce Reportedly Mulling Luxury SUV and V16-Powered Super Roadster

Slowly, but methodically, the BMW Group has expanded Rolls-Royce's offerings since it took over the company's automobile division in 1998. Currently, its lineup includes the Phantom sedan, LWB sedan, Drophead Coupe convertible and Coupe, and the Ghost sedan and LWB sedan models, while at next month's Geneva Auto Salon, it will present the new performance Wraith Coupe based on the Ghost.
However, the competition, and by that we mean the VW Group and its Bentley brand, is not keeping its arms crossed and is getting ready to enter into new territories with the EXP 9 F study that previews an upcoming premium SUV.

And as we've so many times in the past, when one German group takes the decision to create a new type of vehicle or enter a new segment, the others quickly follow suit…

Citing official inside sources, Car Magazine reported that the British carmaker is also looking into the possibility of building an SUV. "We’re monitoring the competition’s activities," Rolls-Royce boss Harald Krüger told the publication, adding, "we’re regularly debating whether to take action. This applies to all brand segments and technologies."

The magazine also learned that Rolls Royce is scheming a super roadster model with a massive 16-cylinder engine. The carmaker toyed around with the idea of developing such a big engine and even created a concept back in 2004, the 100EX, powered by a 9.0-liter V16, but never followed through.

According to the report, the idea floating around Goodwood is an extreme, two-seater roadster based on the next Phantom's aluminium spaceframe chassis fitted with a V16,. The same engine ould also find its way in the Phantom range to differentiate it from the V12-powered Ghost.

2013 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

The launch of the Rolls-Royce Phantom on 1 January 2003 was much more than the reveal of a new ultra-luxury car; it signalled the 21st Century renaissance of the world's most famous luxury automobile brand and the first glimpse of a masterpiece that quickly established itself at the pinnacle of automotive excellence.

For the preceding five years, under BMW Group ownership and in the absence of publicity, designers, engineers and skilled production staff had overseen the birth of a flagship Rolls-Royce motor car and state-of-the-art production facility on the Goodwood Estate in Southern England. Without parallel in the car industry, the achievement was all the more astonishing for a brand which shouldered the weight of historic ups (and occasional downs) and for which expectations for the future were rightly high.

From launch, the Rolls-Royce Phantom proved itself a worthy recipient of the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. From Pantheon grille to long rear overhang, the design was clearly a Rolls-Royce. Every angle revealed a bold yet elegant car with road presence that was second to none.

For such an imposing car, Phantom surprised drivers with its agility and precision in motion while its ride was described by the company at the time as 'designed to lower the pulse'. The magnificently sublime ride, famed through model generations, had returned and waftability re-affirmed itself in the company lexicon.

At the car's core lay a ground-breaking, lightweight aluminium space-frame with power supplied by a sophisticated, direct-injection V12 engine, married to a six-speed auto gearbox. And complementing this excellence in engineering was Phantom's beautiful interior, presenting hand-stitched sumptuous leathers, fine veneers and exquisite detailing, a combination that marked the car as something uniquely special.

New Phantom variants were added, starting with Phantom Extended Wheelbase in 2005. In 2007, Phantom Drophead Coupé revealed the ultimate in luxurious open-top motoring, while Phantom Coupé, Rolls-Royce's sophisticated grand tourer, joined the family in 2008. All were warmly received.

Design

"We should think of Phantom design as a piece of popular, classical music. Over time this has the possibility of different interpretations without losing the essential melody that we know so well." Ian Cameron - Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Director of Design

Like a piece of inspirational music, the Rolls-Royce Phantom continues to delight an audience. Familiar melodies - classic design cues that can be traced through the model generations - are brought to life by an orchestra of craftspeople working at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, where attention to the finest detail delights in every car.

Familiar themes begin with the famous Spirit of Ecstasy, proudly adorning each model's Pantheon grille leaning into the wind with fluttering gown, while in side profile all Phantom family members present a long rear over-hang and classic two-to-one wheel to body height.

The thin-rimmed steering-wheel is reminiscent of elegantly engineered multifunction helms of the Phantom II and III, while further cues in the form of bulls-eye air vents and organ-stop plungers further hint at past masterpieces.

But 21st Century design cues also delight owners, as well as those for whom a glimpse of a Rolls-Royce is a rare moment to be treasured. The interlocked double-R Rolls-Royce monogram in the hubcaps, for example, which remain upright at all times. And coach doors with soft close function, which house Teflon-coated umbrellas to provide the grandest form of disembarkation from any motor car, whatever the weather.

Nearly ten years from launch, the design team responsible for creating a modern masterpiece remain at Rolls-Royce. And for Director of Design Ian Cameron, updating a 21st Century classic would start with one priority: a harmonious, timeless design to embrace state-of-the-art technological improvements.

The new, modern front-end for Phantom Series II, perhaps best exemplifies changes that are more than skin deep. Recessed behind new rectangular light apertures and re-designed front bumpers are fully LED light clusters. The signature is an elegant and dramatic bar, capturing the simple elegance of a continuously lit element, a feature complementing Rolls-Royce tail light design. For balance and proportion, this is integrated horizontally across the centre of Phantom's four-compartment headlamp.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé and Drophead Coupé now come with a single piece grille surround, presenting a smoother, more contemporary front end that arch into sculpted front wings, while Phantom saloon features a new rear bumper incorporating a polished stainless steel highlight.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Saloon and Extended Wheelbase wear a new front wing R-R badge with repeat indicator while three new wheel options, including painted, part-polished and polished, add to the range of 21" wheels, the largest fitted as standard to any production car.

"The result is thoroughly modern, yet embraces those traditional design cues. It's a familiar design, but it's lit in a different way." - Ian Cameron

Interior

Simplicity of design and the very finest materials contribute to the timeless architecture of any Phantom, where touch points are exclusively wood, chrome and leather and where feet can easily be lost in deep, lambswool rugs.

Arguably the best place to experience Phantom's luxury is from the rear seat of Phantom Saloon where passengers - elevated by 18 mm - are presented with an inspirational view down the long sweep of the bonnet and onto the Spirit of Ecstasy. A reduction in the number of seat flutes in front and rear, from five to three, gives a more modern complement to the car's sumptuous natural grain leather and flutes are also added to Drophead Coupé and Coupé seats for Phantom Series II.

An oasis of calm, Rolls-Royce interiors are the perfect environment in which to relax and unwind in welcoming silence. But they can also be a centre for entertainment. Phantom Saloon's theatre configuration adds two monitors within veneered picnic tables for rear seat passengers which are linked to a multi-media player, mounted in a compartment at the rear of the centre console. The inclusion of AV connectors, a six-DVD changer housed in the lower glove box and USB port in the centre console, means occupants can view separate content wherever they may be seated, front or rear.

The LOGIC7 surround sound system by Harman can create a truly cinematic experience on any journey. Seven individual sound signals are processed specifically for the car and its interior conditions using a combination of speakers that include subwoofers housed within resonance chambers in the space created by Phantom's double floor. A nine-channel amplifier delivers supreme clarity, clearly placing musical instruments, sound effects and dialogue at different depths giving the impression of sitting in row one or 20 of a concert.

At the touch of a button, Phantom's elegant analogue clock flips to reveal a new control centre display. The screen has increased in size from 6.5 to 8.8 inches with enhanced pixel density providing a more refined image, as well as split-menu display for more intuitive access to different functions.

A stylish new chrome controller, discreetly hidden within the centre console and rear-centre arm rests when not in use, is flanked by function keys such as menu, telephone and navigation to allow easier access to infotainment functions.

Eight functional bookmarks are now included beneath the monitor. These can be programmed to present desired information at the touch of a chrome key, for example the preferred orientation for satellite navigation maps, to present favourite television channels, pre-set radio stations or to access Phantom's telephone menu.

All Rolls-Royce Phantom family cars now benefit from improved interfaces and interaction with wireless technology. Finding a restaurant, booking a table, then being guided to its location, for example, comes courtesy of the improved functionality and inter-connectivity of Phantom's new satellite navigation system. Further enhancements to navigation functions include guided tours: at the Home of Rolls-Royce, which is situated next to the historic town of Chichester in England, drivers may choose to select a 45 minute tour taking in Roman Britain.

For Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II the telephone cradle has been replaced by a standard fit smart phone cradle which connects directly into the car antennae. The centre recess now also includes USB, Aux-in and 12V power sockets. Additionally, music can be copied directly onto the car's hard-drive, thanks to the addition of a USB port in the glove compartment.

News: Rolls-Royce gets teasy...

Fresh off the back of a record year for sales in 2012, and celebrating its tenth anniversary of being under BMW ownership, Rolls-Royce is dropping a few hints about its all-new model, due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks' time.

Well, make that a very few hints. There is as yet no official word on what type of car this will be, only that it will be "the most dynamic and powerful model in Rolls-Royce's history" and that it will revive a name first used by Rolls in 1938... the Wraith.

Cool name, and it's a model that could break the Rolls mould. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, confirmed the news at the company’s World Dealer Conference in London this morning.

“Rolls-Royce Wraith will draw superlatives when it is unveiled in Geneva,” he explained to representatives of the 100-strong global dealer network. “Expect the boldest design, the most dramatic performance and the most powerful Rolls-Royce that has ever played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. We will present a model whose starting point is luxury, refinement and exclusivity, traits that have made Rolls-Royce the world’s pinnacle luxury good for the last 108 years. This is a car not only defined by a timeless elegance, but one that encapsulates a sense of power, style and drama."

Now, it would be easy to assume that the Wraith will simply be another spin-off from the existing Phantom or Ghost architecture, and it's well known that Rolls has both coupe and convertible versions of the Ghost in the pipeline. Or, it could be something more significant. A replacement for the Phantom, perhaps? Or possibly even a sportier, more affordable (by Rolls standards at any rate) rival to Bentley's big-selling Continental GT? Or, horror of horrors, Rolls' first SUV?

We'll be getting further teaser images and updates between now and the car's official unveiling at Geneva, so we'll keep you posted.

News: Rolls-Royce celebrates 10 years under BMW ownership

On 1 January 2003 the new home of Rolls-Royce officially opened for business and the first car was presented to its delighted customer at one minute past midnight.

Described at the time as ‘the last great adventure in automotive history’, production of Phantom was initially one car per day, rising to three by the end of 2003. Today, with a product range spanning two model families (Phantom and Ghost) and six models, the company’s craftsmen and women hand-build up to 20 cars each day. In 2011, Rolls-Royce celebrated a second consecutive sales record and the best result in the company’s then 107-year history.

The response to the company’s portfolio from customers, media and enthusiasts has been overwhelmingly positive throughout the company’s first ten years of business. Each new model has been warmly welcomed and attracted worldwide acclaim, with the cars winning many design and luxury awards. The company’s growing dealer network provides the same unique and effortless customer ownership experience across the world, with superlative customer service offered as standard.

The unequalled quality of all Rolls-Royce motor cars built at the company’s manufacturing plant has been recognised by the media from the very beginning. And bringing the story up to date, the launch of Phantom Series II in 2012, for example, was met with the highest acclaim.

Starting with a workforce of less than 400, there are now more than 1,400 people employed at the Goodwood-based manufacturing plant and head office. More than 100 new positions were created in 2012 alone. The company has invested heavily in future talent, with thriving apprenticeship, graduate and intern programmes. More than 80% of employees live locally (within 15 miles) and staff turnover is one of the lowest in the manufacturing industry.

The company makes a significant positive economic impact to the local area and, with more than 90% of cars exported, to the British economy. Investment has also extended to the site, with a major new extension to the manufacturing area currently nearing completion. This is to help the company meet further growth in worldwide sales and satisfy demand for highly personalised Ghost and Phantom models.

“Rolls-Royce is a great manufacturing success story and I am very proud to celebrate 10 Years of Excellence," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “The renaissance of the world’s most famous automotive brand and the creation and development of the Home of Rolls-Royce has been an extraordinary and successful journey. I applaud the Rolls‑Royce team at Goodwood and across the world for their passion and together we can look forward to the next ten years with great optimism.”
